Thank Goodness for Susan Stroman & For The Love of Duke!

For everything that the Wall Street Journal seemed to hate about Susan Stroman's ballet for Lincoln Center, I LOVED it for! From the music (Duke Ellington) to the dancers (exuberantly talented) to the set (reminiscent of a Gene Kelly classic) it was a wonderful note to end the evening on.

The evening got off to a great start, thanks to Ed's Chowder House in the Empire Hotel across the street from Lincoln Center...all-in-all such a terrific pre-theatre dining option! The food was delicious, the service a bit over-attentive (every time I put down my fork there was someone hovering asking if I was finished), and the room is beautiful. My only suggestion? Ed needs to decide if he's a white table cloth restaurant or a chowder house; the middle is a bit confusing. (Oh and as Mother Pogue pointed out, the hostess stand is a lawsuit waiting to happen...space for about 5 people to stand, though tends to have more like 15 people at the top of a staircase and next to a coat check. Food for thought China Grill Management).

The 3rd piece of New York City Ballet's performance last night was Susan Stroman's "For the Love of Duke", and judging by the audience's reaction upon exiting Lincoln Center, we weren't alone in thinking her piece was the evening's highlight. I enjoyed Tschaikovsky's "Mozartiana", the opening vignette immediately grabs you, though it then looses it's hold by the 2nd act. The dancers are lovely, but I don't remember there being so many flaws, missteps and disregarding of hand positions (makes me appreciate Fosse even more).

If this means that musicals a la Gene Kelly are making a comeback, I'm a very very excited girl.
